We will be pleased to provide specialized legal assistance in assessing your situation, explaining the conditions under which citizenship may be reacquired, and guiding you through the entire application process.
If you acquired the citizenship of a foreign state between 17 July 2010 and 31 March 2022, this generally resulted in the automatic loss of citizenship of the Slovak Republic. You were also obliged to notify the Ministry of this fact. When assessing your case, however, it is necessary to take into account exceptions that applied over time in line with amendments to the legislation and the specific circumstances under which loss of citizenship did not occur.
If you lost Slovak citizenship in this way, you may apply to have it restored if you prove at least five years of residence in the country whose citizenship you later acquired, with that residence completed before the acquisition.
In addition, in earlier periods, Slovak citizenship could be lost by voluntary release from citizenship upon application. The legislation likewise allows such individuals to apply again for the granting of citizenship.
The application must be submitted in person. You have two options:
Applicants who lost their citizenship during the specified critical period are eligible for a significant benefit. They are not required to have a residence permit in Slovakia, provided they lived in the country where they acquired new citizenship for at least five years.
“The citizenship of the Slovak Republic shall be granted without meeting the condition under paragraph 1(a) to an applicant who lost the citizenship of the Slovak Republic by acquiring foreign citizenship during the period from July 17, 2010, to March 31, 2022, provided the applicant acquired the foreign citizenship of a state in which they had a permitted, registered, or otherwise recorded residence for at least five years at the time of acquiring the foreign citizenship and submitted paper documents proving these facts; the residency condition is considered fulfilled if the applicant actually resided in the territory of the foreign state during this period.”
The application must include, in particular:
All foreign-language documents must be officially translated into Slovak and provided with the required verification (Apostille or superlegalization).
If your Slovak citizenship is restored, the administrative fee is 30 EUR.
While the statutory period for a decision is 24 months, the process is significantly accelerated in practice for well-documented applications. Based on our firm’s experience, citizenship is typically restored within approximately six months.
If you do not meet the five-year residency requirement abroad, it is still possible to apply for citizenship based on special grounds; however, this procedure is administratively more demanding.
