QUESTION

Hello, how can I obtain an international birth certificate? I was born in Slovakia and I need to use it abroad (specifically in Mexico).

ANSWER:

Hello,

Slovakia does not issue an international birth certificate. Below you will find information on the procedure to follow. It depends on the country where you intend to use the document. For most countries, including EU member states, a higher form of authentication called an apostille is sufficient. For some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, a super-legalization is required.

Procedure for higher authentication (apostille):

  1. Request a duplicate birth certificate from any registry office. If the birth certificate is to be used abroad, the issue date must not be older than 6 months. If you have an older birth certificate, request a duplicate from the registry office. You can request this from any registry office in Slovakia. For example, if you were born in Levice, you can still get a duplicate from the registry office in Bratislava.

  2. Obtain the apostille – higher authentication. Send the original or duplicate birth certificate by courier, post, or in person to the following address:
    Legalization Centre, Pluhová 17, 831 03 Bratislava.
You can contact the Legalization Centre at office@akmv.sk or phone 0907 999 909.

  3. Official translations – Translations are arranged only after the higher authentication (step 2), not before. The apostille certificate itself must also be translated. The entire process, including translations, can be handled directly at the Legalization Centre. Translations must be official, i.e., performed by a sworn translator registered with the Ministry of Justice.

  4. Apostille on the translation – In some cases, the foreign country also requires an apostille on the translator’s certificate. The Legalization Centre can assist with this step as well.

The entire process, if the birth certificate was issued by the Bratislava registry, takes approximately 2 working days (plus a few days for translation). If the birth certificate was issued outside Bratislava, the process takes approximately 2–3 weeks.

This process is more complex and consists of about 5 steps of authentication plus the final legalization at the embassy of the given country. The Legalization Centre also handles the entire super-legalization process.

If you need any assistance, feel free to contact the Legalization Centre.
