Requesting ancestors’ documents
Good day,
My friend, whom I am assisting throughout the entire process, is entitled to acquire Slovak citizenship by descent. However, a complication has arisen. We do not have the birth certificate of his great-grandmother, who was born before 1918. Is there a way to resolve this?
Thank you very much.
Good day,
Thank you for your message.
Yes, in general, we are able to retrieve birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, or census records even from the period you mentioned.
If you are interested in our services related to locating and requesting any of the above-mentioned documents, your personal presence is not required.
It is sufficient if you provide us with the details of the ancestor or family member whose document you wish to request. We will prepare and send you a power of attorney for signature, which you will sign (with notarized signature) and send back to our office.
In the meantime, we will prepare the necessary documentation, and once the power of attorney is received, the request will be submitted.
We can also personally collect and retrieve the document from the relevant authorities.
As you have correctly stated, these documents are essential for the entire process of applying for citizenship by descent, and it is completely normal that applicants do not have them at hand.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Good evening, I would like to ask about census sheets. My grandfather emigrated to the USA in 1933. How can I prove his Czechoslovak citizenship? The US naturalization certificate is not sufficient because it does not indicate state citizenship, only the place of birth.
Dear Sir / Madam,
Thank you for your message.
In your case, we recommend searching for the census sheet from 1930, which took place in Czechoslovakia.
The Slovak National Archive preserves the surviving census records only from the years 1930, 1939, 1940, 1950, 1961, 1970, 1980, and 1991, and only from the territory of Slovakia. If your grandfather was residing in the territory of present-day Slovakia, there is a high probability that he will be recorded in the census sheet from 1930.
It will be necessary to fill in an application form, which is then sent to the archive’s address. Once the census sheet is made available, the corresponding fee will have to be paid, as determined by the price list of services of the state archives.
