Slovak Citizenship for Spouses of Slovak Citizens
If you are the spouse of a citizen of the Slovak Republic and wish to acquire Slovak citizenship, the legal framework allows for this possibility. This is a specific route to citizenship based on marriage, reflecting the close connection created with the Slovak Republic.

Pursuant to Section 7(2)(a):
An applicant who has been granted residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic may be granted citizenship of the Slovak Republic without meeting the condition set out in paragraph 1(a), unless this Act provides otherwise, if the applicant has contracted marriage with a citizen of the Slovak Republic, such marriage is in existence, and the applicant has been living in that marriage in a common household in the territory of the Slovak Republic for at least five years immediately preceding the filing of the application for the granting of Slovak citizenship.
Based on the above, the key conditions are:
- Lawful residence in Slovakia,
- Marriage to a Slovak citizen,
- The marriage is ongoing and the spouses have cohabited in Slovakia as one household for at least five years immediately before submitting the application,
- The spouse was a Slovak citizen at the time the marriage was contracted.
