Who is Eligible for Slovak Citizenship by Descent?
You are eligible for the simplified procedure provided that you satisfy the following conditions:
- Ancestor held Czechoslovak citizenship: At least one of your parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents was born in the territory of present-day Slovakia and held Czechoslovak state citizenship.
- You have never held Czechoslovak citizenship
- Exemption from permanent or temporary residence requirements: Applicants with a lineage extending up to the third generation (parent, grandparent, great-grandparent) are no longer required to maintain a registered residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic. Consequently, the application may be submitted directly to the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Prague or to the Consulate General in Brno.

- Zero Residence Requirement: You are not required to apply for temporary or permanent residence in Slovakia, nor are you required to reside here physically.
- Slovak Language Exemption: As citizens of the Czech Republic, you are exempt from the requirement to demonstrate proficiency in the Slovak language.
What documents will you require?
The key to the successful processing of the application is the proper documentation of the direct line of descent. You will, in particular, require the following:
- Civil status documents: Birth, marriage, or death certificates of you and your ancestors (parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents) clearly establishing your line of kinship or, as the case may be, any change of surname.
- Document proving the ancestor’s citizenship: A confirmation or archival document proving that your ancestor held Czechoslovak citizenship and was born in the territory of present-day Slovakia.
- Criminal record extract: Issued by the country of your citizenship as well as by any countries where you have maintained a registered residence in the last 15 years.
