Apostille

An Apostille is a certificate (clause) attached to official documents to ensure their recognition abroad. It is a simplified method of verifying the authenticity of a public document.

An Apostille is used between countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents.

  • If both countries are members of the Convention: A single stamp (Apostille) from the relevant authority is sufficient.
  • If one of the countries is NOT a member: You must undergo a more complex process called superlegalisation (consular legalization).

Examples of documents requiring an Apostille:

  • Registry documents: Birth, marriage, and death certificates.
  • Education: Diplomas, school certificates, confirmations of enrollment.
  • Court documents: Divorce decrees, extracts from the Commercial Register.
  • Others: Criminal record extracts, notarized signatures.
