Exchange of a UK-issued driving license for a Slovak driving license

First, it is necessary to request information about the driving license issued in England (DVLA).

The whole process will be handled by the Legalization Centre

In Bratislava, there is a Legalization Centre that will take care of the entire procedure for you. You just need to send the following information to office@legalizacnecentrum.sk:

  • Your driving licence number
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Postcode
  • A photo or scan of your UK driving licence card

This document contains information about to whom the driving license was issued, its number, the categories granted, and the institution that issued it.

The Slovak driving license is applied for at the relevant document department in Slovakia according to the permanent residence. It is not possible to act through a representative because a new driving license will be issued, for which the person will be photographed.

If you have a driving license for category C or D, you must also submit a valid medical fitness certificate and a valid psychological fitness certificate. If you are a driving license holder who has reached the age of 65, it is necessary to submit a valid medical fitness certificate.

“The conditions and procedure for exchanging a driving licence issued in a contracting state are regulated by Act No. 8/2009 Coll. on Road Traffic and on amendments to certain laws. A contracting state is considered to be a state that is a party to the Geneva Convention or a party to the Vienna Convention.

If the Police Force authority, during the exchange of a driving licence issued in a contracting state, recognizes at least one category of the driving entitlement indicated on that licence, it shall issue a driving licence of the same or equivalent category. The Police Force authority shall exchange a valid driving licence issued in a contracting state for a Slovak driving licence in accordance with the above-mentioned Act. The authority competent to carry out the exchange is the Police Force office according to the applicant’s place of residence. A holder of a driving licence issued in a contracting state other than a state of the European Economic Area, who has residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic and wishes to drive a motor vehicle, is required to apply to the competent Police Force authority for a driving licence exchange within 60 days after the expiry of 185 days from the granting or registration of residence. An applicant for the exchange of a driving licence issued in a contracting state is required to present a valid driving licence, fulfill the legal conditions, and also submit a confirmation from the state (DVLA) that issued the driving licence, stating that the licence was issued with the driving entitlements listed therein, together with a certified translation of this confirmation into the official state language and a certified translation of the driving licence itself.

An application for exchange of a driving licence within 30 days is subject to an administrative fee of €6.50. Upon the explicit request of the applicant, the driving licence can be issued urgently within two working days, in which case the administrative fee is charged at four times the standard rate, i.e. €26.
