Transfer of Vehicle Ownership to a Foreign National
QUESTION
I have been granted temporary residence for the purpose of employment. As I have been residing in the Slovak Republic on a long-term basis, I need to purchase a vehicle. Am I, as a third-country national, entitled to purchase a motor vehicle?
ANSWER:
The legal order does not restrict the capacity of a foreign national to acquire ownership title to a motor vehicle.
Upon the acquisition of the vehicle, its registration shall be required at the District Directorate of the Police Force competent according to your place of residence. For the purposes of Act No. 8/2009 Coll. on Road Traffic and on amendments and supplements to certain acts, residence shall also include the temporary residence of a foreign national within the territory of the Slovak Republic. During the vehicle registration process, it shall be necessary to submit a valid residence permit of the foreign national.
The specific procedure (identical to that applicable to citizens of the Slovak Republic) depends on whether the owner acquired a new vehicle from a dealer or purchased a used vehicle already registered to a previous owner.
Please note, however, that certain restrictions apply to the issuance of a Slovak driving license to a foreign national. A Slovak driving license may be issued to a foreign national only after a period of at least 185 days of granted temporary residence in Slovakia has elapsed.
