The amendment to the Law on Attorneys (effective from 1 January 2013)

The Slovak Parliament approved the draft of the Act. 586/2003 Coll. on Attorneys on 18 October 2012. The amendment to the law introduces the following changes.

  • Extension of the mandatory minimum length of practice of a trainee lawyer for 5 years
  • Introduction of traineeship daily reporting by a trainee lawyer
  • Minimum limit of insurance claims for an attorney – a natural person within a separate insurance contract in the amount of EUR 100,000
  • Possibility for attorneys to employ a trainee lawyer only after three years of registration in the list of attorneys
  • Maximum number of junior lawyers who are trained by one lawyer is set to three
  • Establishment of a Disciplinary Appeal Committee as a new body of the Slovak Bar Association
  • Change in the method of determining the amount of contribution to the activities of the Bar Association: contribution will be determined as 1/3 of the average monthly wage in the Slovak economy established by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic for the first half of the previous calendar year
  • Introduction of the possibility of probationary suspension of disciplinary action
  • Introduced the possibility for an attorney, an association or a company established with an objective of law practice to inform the public about the provision of legal services through advertising
