Slovak Living Abroad – Temporary Residence in Slovakia

A Slovak citizen residing abroad, provided that he/she has been issued a certificate confirming this status, may apply for temporary residence in Slovakia. It is not necessary to separately prove the purpose of residence; it is sufficient to present the relevant certificate of the status of a Slovak residing abroad.

Where to Submit an Application for the Granting of Residence?

The application may be submitted at:

  • the diplomatic mission of the Slovak Republic accredited for the country of which the applicant is a citizen, or
  • the diplomatic mission of the Slovak Republic accredited for the country in which the applicant resides, or
  • the Foreign Police.

If the application is submitted at a diplomatic mission, the mission shall conduct a personal interview with the applicant for the purpose of the preliminary assessment of the application.

The following documents must be submitted with the application for temporary residence of a Slovak living abroad:

Extract from the Criminal Record

A third-country national holding a Certificate of a Slovak Living Abroad is not required to submit a document confirming integrity with the application for the granting of temporary residence, provided that the application is filed within 60 days from the issuance of the Certificate of a Slovak Living Abroad.

Temporary Residence for a Slovak Living Abroad is granted for a maximum period of 5 years.

Specifics When Submitting an Application for the Granting of Temporary Residence

Staying in the Territory of the Slovak Republic During the Decision-Making Period

A third-country national is entitled to stay in the territory of the Slovak Republic until a decision on the application is made, provided that a complete application for the granting of temporary residence has been submitted.

Duration of the Granted Residence

In the case of a Slovak living abroad, the police department shall grant temporary residence for a period of five years.

Business Activity

The law also allows a third-country national who has been granted temporary residence to engage in business activities.

Employment


A Slovak living abroad is entitled to work in the territory of the Slovak Republic.

Decision Period

The police department shall decide on the application for the granting of temporary residence within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application together with all required documents.

Submission of a Medical Report After Granting of Temporary Residence

According to the Act on the Residence of Foreigners, a Slovak living abroad is not required to submit to the police department, within 30 days from receiving the residence document, a medical report confirming that he/she does not suffer from a disease endangering public health.

Basic Obligations After the Granting of Residence

  • Enter Slovakia within 180 days from the granting of residence.
  • Report the commencement of residence to the Foreign Police within three working days from entry into Slovakia.
  • Conclude health insurance no later than within three working days from receipt of the residence document.
  • Notify the Foreign Police in writing if staying outside the territory of the Slovak Republic for more than 180 consecutive days.

Renewal of Temporary Residence

A third-country national is obliged to submit an application for the renewal of temporary residence in person at the competent police department on the official form, or through an electronic service established for this purpose, no later than on the last day of validity of the granted temporary residence.

The police department may renew the temporary residence of a Slovak living abroad for a maximum of five years. A document on health insurance must be submitted with the application.

Slovak Citizenship

After three years of continuous residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic, a Slovak living abroad is entitled to acquire Slovak citizenship.
