Certificate / Confirmation of Citizenship

I live abroad, my Slovak documents are expired, and I need to obtain new ones. Is a confirmation of citizenship sufficient, or do I need a certificate of citizenship? What documents and in what form are required? Will I need originals? What is the usual duration of the whole process?

A confirmation of citizenship serves to prove Slovak citizenship retroactively, as of a specific date and at a requested time.

A certificate of citizenship, however, confirms that you are currently a citizen of the Slovak Republic.

The required documents depend on the specific case. Slovak civil registry documents usually suffice in the form of simple copies. For foreign documents, such as a certificate of personal status or naturalization certificate, an apostille and an official translation are typically required. These serve to prove that you have not lost Slovak citizenship under applicable legislation.

To obtain personal identification documents, an original certificate or confirmation of citizenship is required in most cases. However, we recommend consulting with the competent authority (e.g. the Slovak embassy) to get precise information.

Our law firm can prepare the necessary documents within a few days, including drafting a power of attorney. Once we receive all required documents and the signed power of attorney with a notarized signature (we recommend doing this at the embassy; otherwise, apostille and official translation will be needed), we will file the application. If you’re interested, feel free to contact us at office@akmv.sk.

If your case is straightforward (e.g., you have lost Slovak citizenship or failed to report acquiring another citizenship), the document can be issued on the spot. Otherwise, the process may take several weeks.
